Renting safely in Ontario
- See it first. Never send money for a unit you haven't viewed, or before you've signed a lease.
- Deposits are limited. A landlord can ask for last month's rent and a refundable key deposit. A "damage deposit" isn't allowed.
- Use the Standard Lease. Most Ontario tenancies must use the province's Standard Lease.
- Check the realtor. Look them up on the RECO public register before you pay anything.
